Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The module explores the primary financial and tax issues relevant to the start up, growth and intemationalisation of a small or medium enterprise and their implications for the owner-manager.

Syllabus:

It provides an overview of the financial principles as they relate to the management of small and medium enterprises, how the Irish tax system operates and the taxation issues facing SMEs in Ireland and internationally. Sources of funding (public and private) for a new and growing business are evaluated and the role of Venture Capital finding is discussed.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Understand the funding options for starting and growing a new venture. Appreciate what financial statements represent. Interpret and analyse financial statements. Understand the principles of working capital management. Identify and assess the financial consequences of different formation structures.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

Recognise the key financial metrics to assess firm performance. Appreciate the various sources of finance available, including those beyond the traditional sources of finance. Develop an appreciation ofthe tax implications of some key decisions that need to be made by the small firm.
